A sobering report from the World Health Organization (WHO) has revealed that infectious diseases have claimed 45 238K lives worldwide in 2023. This staggering figure underscores the immense burden that infectious diseases continue to pose on global public health.

Most Prevalent Infections

According to the WHO report, lower respiratory infections accounted for the highest number of deaths, claiming 4.2 million lives. HIV/AIDS, tuberculosis, malaria, and hepatitis were also among the leading infectious disease killers, responsible for millions of deaths combined.

Regional Disparities

The report highlights significant regional disparities in infectious disease mortality. Africa and Southeast Asia bore the heaviest burden, with more than half of all deaths occurring in these regions.
