Korea Electronic Travel Authorization (K-ETA) Required for All Foreigners Entering South Korea

Effective July 1, 2021

The Republic of Korea has announced that all foreigners wishing to enter the country must now obtain a Korea Electronic Travel Authorization (K-ETA) prior to their arrival.

Application Process

Foreigners can apply for a K-ETA through the official website of the Korea Immigration Service. The application process is straightforward and online. The K-ETA is valid for two years from the date of approval.

Eligible Countries

As of July 1, 2021, nationals from 107 countries and regions are eligible to apply for a K-ETA. This includes citizens of the United States, Canada, the United Kingdom, and most European countries.

Exemptions

There are a few exceptions to the K-ETA requirement. Diplomatic and official passport holders, as well as permanent residents of South Korea, are not required to obtain a K-ETA. Additionally, foreigners who are transiting through South Korea without leaving the transit area of the airport do not need a K-ETA.

Enforcement

Foreigners who arrive in South Korea without a valid K-ETA may be denied entry into the country. They may also be subject to fines or other penalties.
